What are Jowls ?

A sagging jawline, or “jowls” as it is often referred to, is the skin that forms under the chin and jawline as we age. One of the major concerns of the aging face, jowls are caused by a loss of elasticity and thinning of the skin, combined with gravity taking its toll on the underlying structures that support the skin and prop everything up.

Why It Happens ?

Jowls can be a sign of skin loss that occurs during menopause. During menopause, the body loses collagen, a protein that gives skin strength. Women can lose around 30% of their collagen in the first five years of menopause, and then around 2% each year for the next 20 years. This loss of collagen can cause skin to lose firmness and sag, leading to jowls.

What you can do ?

There are many ways to treat sagging jowls, including surgical and nonsurgical procedures. Surgical procedures include neck lifts, mini facelifts, and facelifts. Nonsurgical procedures include:

  • Dermal fillers: Add structure and definition.
  • Radiofrequency skin treatments: Heat collagen fibers and stimulate new collagen production.
  • Laser resurfacing: Improves skin for a firmer look.
  • Micro-needling: Improves skin for a firmer look.
  • Acupuncture: A less invasive alternative
  • Facial massage: A less invasive alternative
  • Facial yoga: A less invasive alternative
